Eating at Etzel Itzik was most certainly a unique experience. It is not the type of restaurant you would find at your typical Florida strip mall. Tucked away on a side street of Aventura, the location is non-descript and most people driving by would probably miss this hidden gem. The décor is simple, with deli-style tables and walls filled with pictures of patrons. Some menu options are posted behind the counter in both Hebrew and English and a glass counter showcases some of their desserts. A variety of salads are offered with your meal, each unique and delicious. Warm pita is also served and we chose to order hummus and tahini as an appetizer as well. The service was attentive and our waitress could answer all our questions. I ordered shakshuka, a middle eastern dish of sautéed tomatoes, peppers and spices and then baked with an egg on top. The food prices were very reasonable! We were a table of five and left paying less than $60.

I arrived at this deli off Miami Gardens Drive (across the train tracks from Aventura) at primetime on Saturday afternoon and got lucky to find parking nearby. Upon entering, I was greeted and sat in the last available table by the friendly owner. The busgirl was bilingual and offered me a choice of five (5) different veggie plates. Though small, these three (3) tasty treats – a green cabbage vinegar salad, a thinly-sliced beet salad, and pickled boiled vegetables – were a tour de force! My lunch of Margez Moroccan Spicy Sausage sandwich arrived. Though I had requested the accompanying salad on the side, it did not arrive until the owner asked me if everything was ok. Next time, I will try a lunch platter instead of a sandwich. Once the meal was consumed, I wanted to let the patrons waiting outside in the rain to enjoy their meals. I am willing to give it another shot in the future!

I have been to this restaurant before and had take out many times. Although the street is under construction, if you’re looking for authentic Israeli food that has many flavors and delicious humus and salads with a zesty kick just enough to set them apart, then you should try Etzel Itzik Deli. I would not worry about the location and parking and focus on a diner / joint atmosphere that is enjoyable. This is a fast paced restaurant where the food is fresh and the plates keep on coming out. With all of the delicious side salads and nice portions for their main dishes, this is a location you should keep on your food list. If you grew up with this food, it will bring back memories. If not, you’ll enjoy a new cuisine.
