For anyone that truly enjoys Spanish foods, either in tapas (small plates) or Paella, without having to fly to Spain—this is the place to go! Lunch time is a bit more relaxing than dinner. It may be a little pricey, but the quality is definitely there. At lunch, the crowds are smaller and “Spanish” music is played adding to the overall experience. It’s located off the beaten track of Delray but with assistance from GPS it’s easy to find. We were seated immediately at 6pm, but by 6:30 the restaurant was full on a Monday evening. Luckily, we had reservations. Christine was one of the owners daughters and very attentive to our desires. Tapas are small by nature. The paella was huge! We all took leftovers home. The food is beautifully presented, picture perfect. Endless bread with a wonderful tomato garlic dipping sauce. Mike kept our wine glasses filled.

We met friends there who had just been seated before we arrived since we were about 40 minutes late for our reservation. They ordered Sangria and we had a debate over white sangria, which I never had, or red. Deciding on red, one pitcher was all we needed for our table of four. Rosa was determined to find out how we heard about Papa’s Tapas. I told them we heard from friends. It was cute because I felt like I got put on the spot and didn’t know what to say. The Sangria set the tone for our experience. It was really good. The appetizers of octopus and chorizo melted in your mouth and then the Paella arrived topped with shrimps, scallops, mussels, calamari, clams, fish and chicken. It was truly an oceanic Spanish expedition of the gastronomy kind. It was an interesting contrast to Rebel House where the focus was on the environment and people. Papa’s Tapas had the art work and party people watching but the food was clearly the focus. And the sisters were great. They were very engaging, and entertaining and sincerely interested in you and your experience in their restaurant. They told us the story of the father traveling, returning to Spain delving deeper into the cuisine of his heartland. Their Mom was from Santo Domingo. I would certainly recommend Papa’s Tapas to my friends and plan on returning next time we go to Delray. Thanks for the suggestion.

My overall experience was good; there was definitely a couple of highlights like the Sangria, the wings in the tomato sauce –very tasty– and the sautéed vegetables with garlicky flavors. The waitress was very nice and accommodating and the rest of the staff was very attentive. Our bread was a little hard, but we didn’t say anything because the waiter came out with a fresh basket of bread. Very family atmosphere, good menu. Would I recommend it to others? Probably not.
