Located across for the courthouse in Stuart, FL, Pusateri’s Chicago style thin crust pizza can be easily overlooked. Our family arrived to somewhat organized chaos which appeared to be run by a smiling, collegiate staff that appeared to be frazzled. There was a wait list of approximately 20 minutes that transpired into closer to 45 as the staff failed to prevent some patrons from hijacking tables both inside and out, and seemed overwhelmed in their ability to quickly clear a table and seat new patrons. We also watched empty tables go unfilled for too long as our children repeatedly tried to run into traffic while we waited for a table. Perhaps the dough is made with baking soda instead of yeast, or there is no leavening whatsoever, but the texture of the crust was odd. I could not help but to compare it to a microwave pie from the frozen aisle. The signature sausage was delicious with a perfect hint of fennel seed, and the unusually sweet sauce was a pleasant surprise coated with a plethora of perfectly browned cheese. Sadly, these fine ingredients were wasted atop a crust that reminded me of little more than a stale cracker. I was hungry and polite, and we can smile our way through most disappointments, but even my daughter found herself peeling the cheese from the crust. With a different dough recipe I believe miracles could be achieved, but it would appear Pusateri’s has a loyal following of cracker-style pizza lovers that may not have ventured far enough north of the Mason-Dixon line to experience what great pizza should be, whether in New York or Chicago.

Upon arrival, we realized there were only a few tables inside of the restaurant – and all 4 were taken! We were forced to sit outside – on a cold Florida evening (I know – feel sorry for us Floridians). Inside and outside was nothing fancy – just a plain type of corner pizzeria. We discovered ample parking behind the building – where there was a deck with a few patio tables and chairs. We ordered apps – the fried ravioli and a side of meatballs and sauce. The fried ravioli had some parmesan cheese on them and served with marina sauce. The meatballs were very tender and delicious. Then we had the Chicago Signature Sausage thin crust pizza. The Chicago thin crust is not for me – however, they were very generous with the sausage! We also had the Chicago beef sandwich with mild gardiniera, peppers, provolone and au jus. The sandwich meat was very tender; the extras (cheese, etc.) just took the sandwich to a new level – it was delicious and sloppy! We were a bit disappointed in the size of the cannoli’s. However, they were delicious and worth the price.
